LS Cable & System, the cable manufacturing affiliate of LS Group, acquired a 16 percent stake recently in KT Submarine, a marine affiliate of telecommunications service provider KT. The tie-up will help them fortify a competitive edge in the global renewable energy market, the LS affiliate said.
The cable manufacturer won a supply order worth about 240 billion won ($184 million) for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables for the Norfolk Boreas Offshore Wind Farm in the United Kingdom.
The contract is the biggest of its kind won by a Korean cable manufacturer for a project in Europe.
It also indicates further expansion in North America and Asia, the firm said. The U.K. plans to make renewables account for over 60 percent of its national energy mix.
The Boreas wind farm will be built by the Swedish state-run electric power firm Vattenfall and it will be able to generate 1.3 gigawatts of electricity, upon beginning its operations in 2026.
LS Cable's underwater HVDC cables will be capable of supplying 320 kilovolts from the wind farm. The cables are insulated in cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), a hydronic tubing manufactured from polyethylene plastic featuring a 3D molecular bond structure and shape memory characteristics.
The company signed a 350 billion won contract early this year to supply undersea cables for offshore wind farms in North America.
It has supplied undersea cables in the amount of 800 billion won to Taiwan over the past three years. (Advertorial)
