LG Energy Solution is striving to provide sustainable energy products to its customers in consideration of environment, social and corporate governance (ESG) throughout its management. To that end, sustainable management is being practiced by producing eco-friendly energy products, the reuse and recycling of batteries and by being more responsible in managing the supply chain, the battery maker said Sunday.
To fight climate change, the company is actively promoting the introduction of renewable energy to reduce energy use in the battery production process and minimize greenhouse gas emissions.
As part of its efforts, LG Energy Solution expressed its willingness to pursue an eco-friendly environment through joining both the RE100 and EV100 campaigns in April 2021.
"RE100" refers to "renewable energy 100," a campaign replacing 100 percent of electricity a company uses with renewable sources such as solar and wind power. "EV100" is another global initiative among companies to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) used in the workplace.
LG Energy Solution has been operating its Poland plant using 100-percent renewable energy since 2019 and its United States plant has been operating using 100-percent renewable energy since July 2020. Its plants in Korea and China are also increasing the portion of renewable energy used. In particular, the Ochang plant in Korea took part in the Green Premium system, which was implemented by the government, paying extra to receive 61-gigawatt hours of renewable energy annually.
The results of these efforts of LG Energy Solution have been proven by data. In January, the Carbon Disclosure Project committee published the RE100 report, an annual report that compiled the progress of each company's RE100 target achievement.
The report showed that the company's RE100 conversion performance was 33 percent, the highest ranking among Korean companies. "Recently, the importance of participating in the RE100 program is increasing due to the expansion of renewable energy investment and the growing demand for customers and investors to respond to climate change thanks to the eco-friendly policy stance of European and North American countries. Batteries are key products that must play a pivotal role in achieving carbon neutrality," the company said.
The global leading battery maker is also making efforts to improve its competitiveness in reuse and recycling of batteries. "The waste batteries discharged after being used in EVs can be reused depending on the remaining life and product condition. We are securing technologies and reviewing investments to efficiently utilize them," a company official said. (Advertorial)
