STX Corporation, a trading company engaged in the shipping and logistics businesses, as well as in the trading of energy, commodity and machinery, donated a combined 130 million won ($95,000) to help the bereaved families of 26 foreign nationals who died from the deadly Itaewon crowd crush in Seoul on Oct. 29.
The company said Thursday that it recently told the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Family & Multiculturalism Division that it wants to donate money to all of the disaster's victims of foreign nationality. Through the Yongsan District Office and each country's embassies, 5 million won will be given to each family of the victims, according to STX.
"Although the government and many businesses have extended a helping hand after the accident, it is unusual for a company to support foreign victims directly," a Seoul Metropolitan Government official said. "We hope that the support from STX will console the bereaved families of the foreign victims, who are in deep sorrow."
STX expressed its condolences to the families overseas who lost their loved ones in the tragedy.
"As a company doing business globally, we feel responsible," the company said in a press release.
According to the government, the deceased include five Iranians, four Chinese, four Russians, two Americans, two Japanese and one person each from France, Australia, Norway, Austria, Vietnam, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Sri Lanka.
