Samsung Electronics has released a graphics DRAM that can process a download of 275 full high definition (FHD) movies in one second, the fastest in the industry, according to the global leader in memory chipmaking, Thursday.
This is enabled by Graphics Double Data Rate 6 (GDDR6) Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM), a type of synchronous graphics random-access memory with high bandwidth. It has a "double data rate" interface, designed for use in graphics cards, game consoles and high-performance computing.
The graphics DRAM market is expected to log double-digit growth every year, powered by soaring demand for high-performance computing (HPC) and autonomous vehicles.
The firm said GDDR6 DRAM with a speed of 24 gigabits per second (Gbps) can process up to 1.1 terabytes (TB) of data per second if mounted on high-performing graphics cards.
The operating speed was increased by over 30 percent compared to previous generation models, a feat materialized by advanced technologies including High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) and Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography.
Its energy efficiency has improved by over 20 percent, helping extend laptop battery life.
The new DRAM met the standards set by Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC), more widely known as the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association. It is a global industry group that develops open standards for microelectronics.
"Our 24Gbps GDDR6 DRAM will be reviewed for function and user experience enhancement after they are installed in next-generation systems and client products this month," a Samsung Electronics official said.
"We will commercialize our products in a timely manner to meet the demands of the computing market in need of high-capacity processing, thereby continuing to lead the next-generation graphics DRAM market."
Omdia, a London-based marketing research firm, said Samsung Electronics accounted for 38.9 percent of the market share in the graphics DRAM market last year.
