Hyundai Motor Group's three car brands ― Hyundai Motor, Kia and Genesis ― will start producing electric vehicles (EV) in the U.S. state of Georgia by 2025. The automotive group made the announcement at a groundbreaking ceremony for a new U.S. factory, Wednesday.

The automotive group plans to inject $5.54 billion to produce various kinds of EV models and EV batteries at Metaplant America in Bryan County, Georgia. The plant will begin production in the first half of 2025 with an annual output capacity of 300,000 EVs.

Chung Euisun, chairman of the group, said the new plant will help the automotive group take a leap forward in the EV business.

"Hyundai and the people of Georgia share many qualities: respect for our histories, ingenuity, creativity and determination to make the world better for the next generation," Chung said during the groundbreaking ceremony.

"Today, our EVs are recognized as best in class, and with this partnership, we are determined to be the global leader in electrification, safety, quality and sustainability. With the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, we will continue to evolve beyond an automaker to the world's leading mobility solutions provider."

The new plant will not only help increase Hyundai's presence in the U.S.' fast-growing EV market, but also contribute to the development of Georgia's economy as it is expected to create more than 8,100 jobs in the next few years, according to Hyundai.

"With more Georgians working than ever before, record jobs and investment coming to all parts of our state, and award-winning workforce development programs and infrastructure, the Peach State's economy is reaching new heights," Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said.

"Our partnership with Hyundai Motor Group and the groundbreaking of this innovative facility exemplifies that unprecedented success. With a long-term commitment to improving lives and livelihoods, we look forward to continuing this partnership and seeing its impact on both this community and our state as a whole."

The automotive group said Metaplant America will play a pivotal role in its EV industry leadership. The group is currently accelerating its electrification efforts with a target of selling 3.23 million EVs annually by 2030.

"With the additional EV and battery production capabilities in the U.S., the group aims to maintain its position as one of the top three EV providers there. The group plans to lead the EV market not just in sales, but also in terms of design, technologies and mobility solutions optimized for the electric mobility era," the group said.

The group added its new plant will become an "intelligent manufacturing plant" as all production processes such as order collection, procurement, logistics and production will be optimized utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and data.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, the plant will rely primarily on renewable energy sources for its electricity and use emissions-reduction technologies to meet RE100 requirements, the group added.
