Korea's spatial information industry surpassed 10 trillion won ($7.8 billion) in sales last year, in a feat underpinned by robust demand for the digitization of work processes at state-run organizations and their private peers, powered further by the COVID-19 pandemic, the land ministry said Monday.

Also buttressing the average annual increase of a solid 7.8 percent over the past decade was the metaverse, an online platform where young individuals express their identities through the use of avatars.

The industry provides services whereby three-dimensional maps contain information related to geometric and geographical properties. Geometric properties concern space, including distance, shape, size and relative position of figures. Geography refers to the study of the land, features, inhabitants and phenomena of the Earth.

Last year's 10 trillion won in sales amounted to an increase of 9.9 percent, or 969 billion won, from the year before. The industry had 71,636 employees and 5,807 firms, up 3,896, or 5.8 percent and 212, or 3.8 percent, respectively.

The industry registered across-the-board growth, propelled by an increase in government and private investments as well as the development of new technologies in automated construction vehicles and robots, augmented reality (AR) and disaster management and prevention analysis.

Spatial data publishing and their IT-related businesses reported a combined 14-percent increase from the year before, followed by wholesale (10.7 percent), IT services (8.1 percent) and manufacturing (5.6 percent).

Anchoring the soaring data-driven industry are small players, as indicated by almost three-fifths ― or 3,463 of them ― which have registered less than 1 billion won in sales last year. Just about the same number of firms ― or 3,480 of the total ― had fewer than 10 employees.

The ministry said it would push for swift deregulation to advance the development of key technologies to manage and operate smart spatial data effectively and efficiently.

"We will outline a legal framework to enhance the overall operation of the system and remove hurdles to foster the spatial information industry," the ministry said.

"The efforts will fortify the country's capabilities to make a leap forward to become the global leader in the global spatial data market," it said.

Years of Korea's experience and knowledge of spatial data utilization will be shared with members of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) at the international spatial data standardization congress in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, next year.
